ABOUT TANZANITE
Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 in the Merelani Hills at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. This region remains the only source of the gemstone in the world.

The gem is a variety of the mineral zoisite and is celebrated for its strong pleochroism—meaning it reveals different colors as it is viewed from different angles. Skilled cutting determines how these colors appear, and the finest stones display a vivid combination of blue and violet with flashes of red.

Tanzanite is also unusual in that its most prized color often emerges in larger crystals. Stones of substantial size, such as the example featured here, are able to display the deep, velvety saturation that collectors value most.
